Kentucky 32 Alpaca Brand Tall Fescue
Fescue grasses are prone to endophyte fungus, which produces toxic alkaloids that are dterimental to females and crias. Endophyte toxins have been shown lower foal weights, lower live briths, lower gestation periods, more retained placentas, and low or no milk production from the mares. No work has been done to prove this with camelids, but it stands to reason that the same side effects would occur in camelids.

It is important that you eradicate the old grass stand prior to planting. If the old stand was fescue, it may be infected. Consult your local herbicide company for recommendations on taking out the old stand. A non-selective herbicide like glyphosphate, a summer fallow program,or some combination may be needed. All grass must be killed and remnant seed in the soil should be sprouted and killed to ensure a clean seedbed.
Seed should be planted at a rate of 25 to 30 pounds per acre.A clean, fine, firm seedbed is optimum for a successful establishment. Seed should be drilled no deeper than one half inch. Seed can also be broadcast, then harrowed in. Roll to compact, this guarantees a good soil/seed contact. Fertilize with a good starter fertilizer recommended by your local fertilizer company will be beneficial. Lime application may be needed to correct soil acidity. Check with your local extention agent for soil testing.
Kentucky 32 Alpaca Brand Tall Fescue can be planted in spring or fall when weather is mild and moist. Irrigation will help guarantee success. The new stand should not be grazed until well established.
